چکیده

Identification of the cognitive mechanisms behind gait changes in aging is a prime endeavor gerontology and geriatrics. For this reason, we have implemented new dual-task paradigm where an auditory attentional task performed during over-ground walking. Dichotic listening assesses spontaneous attention voluntary directed to right left-ear. The uniqueness dichotic relies on its requirements that vary difficulty recruitment resources from whole brain one hemisphere. When used dual-tasking, asymmetric effects certain parameters been reported. present study aims acquire more global understanding how affects domains. Specifically, aimed understand vs lateralized altered Principal Component Analysis (PCA) structure healthy older adults. Seventy-eight adults (mean age: 71.1 years; 44 women 34 men) underwent Bergen test while As only focuses gait, costs for were calculated entered into PCA analyses. We explored bilateral (i.e., both limbs together) as well (i.e, separate by limb). first established domains single-task Then, cost scores series PCAs. Results PCAs showed limited alterations structure. In contrast, data demonstrated modifications listening. corresponding all conditions different factor solutions ranging between 4 6 factors explained 73.8% 80% total variance. whole, had impact “pace”, “pace variability” “base support condition, six-factor solution explaining 78.3% variance asymmetrical disruptions was focused right-ear, five-factor 89% similar baseline found. left-ear, four-factor found with symmetrical factors. These findings demonstrate time specific facets control symmetrically asymmetrically

Effects of attention on dichotic listening: an 15O-PET study.

The present study investigated the effect of attention on brain activation in a dichotic listening situation. Dichotic listening is a technique to study laterality effects in the auditory sensory modality. Two different stimuli were presented simultaneously, one in each ear. Twelve subjects listened to lists of consonant-vowel syllables, or short musical instrument passages, with the task of de...

Comparison of Microsoft Kinect TM and Observational Gait Analysis in the Assessment of Gait Parameters of Apparently Healthy Adults

Objectives: The Microsoft KinectTM is reported to have compelling potentials for gait analysis in medicine; however, there are few data on its comparison with observational gait analysis (OGA). This study compared the Microsoft KinectTM and the OGA in the assessment of gait parameters of apparently healthy adults. Methods: Ninety-seven apparently healthy young male adults participated in this ...

Gait Is Associated with Cognitive Flexibility: A Dual-Tasking Study in Healthy Older People

Objectives: To analyze which gait parameters are primarily influenced by cognitive flexibility, and whether such an effect depends on the walking condition used. Design: Cross-sectional analysis. Setting: Tübingen evaluation of Risk factors for Early detection of Neurodegenerative Disorders. Participants: A total of 661 non-demented individuals (49-80 years). Measurements: A gait assessment wit...

Effects of Aging on Arm Swing during Gait: The Role of Gait Speed and Dual Tasking

Healthy walking is characterized by pronounced arm swing and axial rotation. Aging effects on gait speed, stride length and stride time variability have been previously reported, however, less is known about aging effects on arm swing and axial rotation and their relationship to age-associated gait changes during usual walking and during more challenging conditions like dual tasking. Sixty heal...
